Distillation day at "La Vecchia Distilleria"

Immagine
In recent days I was in Vallebona (Imperia), at La Vecchia Distilleria (the Old Distillery), a family business that produces outstanding essences of neroli and petitgrain, as well as sought-after "bitter orange blossom water" (Acqua di Fior d'Arancio amaro) with which several Chefs prepare gastronomic delicacies of the highest level. I was there because I had some helichrysum to distill and Pietro Guglielmi, the young owner had offered me hospitality. It was a really fantastic morning: in addition to the pleasure of spending some time with Pietro chatting about topics we both are passionate about, seeing the distiller come into operation was very exciting. What happens when water and fire begin to dance inside it, is something truly magical, no word can truly describe it.  I can only say that the result of this dance is Essence. And this is enough for me to get goosebumps. In my case, it was nine milliliters of precious, fragrant, incredible essence of Helichrysum italicu

E già questo, a me, mette i brividi.

Eight new scents of Playdoh

Immagine
I have always loved the scent of Playdoh.  Opening the yellow jar already delights me from a tactile point of view (the dough is soft enough for the fingers to sink into it) but the real pleasure is olfactory: the buttery, chewy, fresh and talc-like smell is unmistakable, I've been carrying it with me since childhood.  Well, I just discovered that eight new "adult" fragrances are now available. A warm and nutty "Overpriced Latte", "Spa Day" with fresh and floral notes, "Mom Jeans" with notes of clean laundry (white musks, I dare say), "Lord of the lawn" with cut grass notes, "Grill King" with smoky, barbecue notes and "Dad Sneakers"smelling of new rubber shoes. I will definitely try them, maybe they will be fantastic ... in any case, a normally fragranced yellow jar will always be home with me.

Immagine

Wax crayons - my Madeleine

Immagine
Yesterday I found at home a box of 24 wax crayons I knew nothing of; so I opened it and startedt sorting them out to watch the colors, and while I was handling them, the typical smell spread in the room and... I got so moved I nearly cried.  I'm not very familiar with drawing so I've never used crayons again from primary school or so . That very peculiar smell materialized a world of sensations and emotions which were locked somewhere inside of me; I was a child again, for a moment. It's been so nice!  I've been cuddling this thing all day.   Has   something similar  ever happened to you?

X Factor e Profumi

Immagine

Scent of Mystery and Maai by Bogue Profumo

Experiments aiming at combining cinema with odors were being made in the past decades; today I will tell you one of these, which took place in 1960, at the launch of the film " Scent of Mystery ", the only film shot in "Odorama". It was a fun and light thriller set in Spain, telling the adventures of an American tourist to save a young heiress from a conspiracy. But the hero can only identify her by her scent.  Thirty odors (including smell of coffee, salt, talc, toast and others) were made for the film, which were sprayed in the room through a device called "Smell Brain". The experiment, however, did not work too well, the machine wasn't working in synch with the film and would release odors late, with a whistle that distracted the public from the vision. Some smells were regarded too strong and nauseating. When the problem was solved it was too late: word of mouth had decreed the failure of Odorama. Other experiments with film and smells also t

Amore e Psiche: arte vetraria e profumiera a Villa Carlotta

Immagine

Amore e Psiche: glass art+perfumery at Villa Carlotta

Immagine
Until August 2, the beautiful Villa Carlotta in Tremezzo (Como) hosts " Microcosm of Glass ", an art installation of Murano glass by Silvia Rutolo and Mauro Puccitelli . Part of this installation is named " Amore and Psyche ", and joins glass art and perfumery in an exciting way. But first thinglet's speak of the visual part: here you have SilviaRutolo's site ; Silvia   is not only a great person and a passionate woman, but above all a very much appreciated artist, who creates little masterpieces to wear.  In particular, this year we have worked with her since she wanted to scent her "Cocoons". The cocoons are made of Murano glass and may be transparent, colored, or with gold and silver streaks, and make refined pendants. Inside the glass cocoon, she places a silk thread, which the customer can then scent using a tiny dropper. It's  a very elegant and exclusive way to perfume oneself, and, together, sport an unique piece of handmade art

#astrosamantha and the world of smells

Immagine
Samantha Cristoforetti (yes, #astrosamantha, the astronaut) spoke twice about smells during her mission on the ISS, and I believe no other astronaut before had ever mentioned anything about smell and outer space.  The first time was more a joke than a real thing (“Outer space smells of something burned"), while the second was more serious. She had just landed few minutes before, and one of the first things she said was:"I perceive a soft, pleasant smell”.  The second statement is the one that strikes me and makes me reflect . What I would give to have her describe that smell!

This morning

This morning I was in a perfumery shop downtown, as I wanted to smell some new launches (from Armani, Hermès, Dolce & Gabbana, Cartier, Reminiscence, Sisley).  I sprayed what seemed a thousand strips hoping that something might strike my fantasy and whisper "Wear me!".  But no, apparently nothing made me want to wear it on skin. My brain sememd unable to switch to something higher than “bland” “nondescript” “cheap”, the maximum was a “meh”.  Was it me... or them? Then I saw the “sale” basket and exploring it, I decided to spray on my wrist a little Tuscany for Men (citrus, black pepper, cumin, woods, for a fragrance that exudes pride from the first note to the last), then opted for Lancaster (a beautiful amber-y 80s scent reminiscent of Guerlain Samsara without the sweetness, Jil Sander 4, C.Klein's Obsession without the stickiness, and Venezia by Biagiotti) on the other wrist. Then on a shelf I saw that wonder of elegance and arrogance that is YSL&
