King Kong (by Kenzo 1978)

Immagine
Even thirty five years ago, at its launch, King Kong was regarded as "unusual",  in the sense of out of the ordinary, strange and intriguing; in a word: with character. At those times unusual creations  were not only allowed but even welcomed, and companies tried their best to permeate all their products (fragrances, too) with their values and aesthetics. Kenzo's couture was unusual, characteristic, intriguing, and his first scent, named King Kong had to be the same , of course. Today, designers license their brand's perfumes to other companies, thus losing control over what is offered with their name on. In this way, scented creations are not ambassadors of the designer's style anymore, they only have to sell as expected by the licensee.

Djedi (Jacques Guerlain, 1926)

Immagine

With this review I participate in the game "Settimana INCOM...commerciale" on Adjiumi forum! This scent is named after a magician lived in ancient Egypt during Pharaoh Cheops' reign, his extraordinary abilities are told in a collection of ancient papyrus. In fact, when this fragrance was born, the aesthetics related to Ancient Egypt was extremely trendy: jewels and furniture of that period, in the most exquisite Art Dèco style, were often inspired by Egyptian models just brought to light by researchers/adventurers who went rummaging in the pyramids. Let's say that Guerlain have always been very good at capturing the fashions of the moment , turning the various actors of culture and society which people talked about, fantasized about and fell in love with, into perfumes.

Versace l'Homme (versione originale, 1984-86)

Immagine

This review is part of the "Settimana INCOM...merciale" of the Adjiumi forum. Click here to know more. I've been testing Versace L'Homme for several days now, and every time I wear it I find myself asking: "Why I knew nothing of this perfume?" It feels contemporary and well structured, with many different facets, none of which goes "lost" : the citrus opening is dry and bitter, the aromatic facet features a beautiful, expensive basil note not so easy to find, the floral heart is refined with rose and carnation, and the woody base is all cedar, sandalwood and patchouli; after twenty minutes then, a touch of soft skin -like a pair of comfortable suede moccasins- emerges, making this scent unforgettable. Also, it has a more than satisfactory presence on skin, projects enough without overdoing, and lasts a lot: a good eight hours!

Parfums Rares/Rare Perfumes: new book by the Osmothèque

Immagine
Today I'll show you pics of a newly released book, " Parfums Rares " published  by Osmothèque ( website ) in collaboration with Terre Bleue. The book presents artistic perfumery as a new and important niche inside the perfumery market,  and presents some brands of particular interest. Pages are full of pictures, the text provides anecdotes and brands' histories.  There is also an English edition, entitled "Rare Perfumes" . It is important to purchase it because it's interesting and well done,  but especially because it finances the activity of collection, study and conservation the Osmothèque carries on in Versailles. Osmothèque is in fact the only perfume library in the world, the place where thousands of rare fragrances are safeguarded, including some very old and vintages that made the history of perfumery and unfortunately have completely disappeared.  I had already written about them  here ,  here  and  here Those who wish to support

Parfum Rares: un nuovo libro dell'Osmothéque

Immagine

Derby (Jean Paul Guerlain, 1985) versione vintage e versione attuale (2012)

Immagine

Derby vintage (Jean Paul Guerlain, 1985) and new version (2012)

My tests for the "SettimanaINCOM... commerciale" on the Adjiumi forum continue: these days I tried Guerlain's Derby . I have a soft spot for chypre fragrances, leather chypres  in particular : Aramis, L'Interdit (Givenchy), Jolie Madame (Balmain), Chanel's Cuir de Russie, Bandit (Piguet) are among the best of this family. As for Derby, it was created in 1985 by Jean Paul Guerlain and removed from production a few years later because it wasn't as successful as expected ; in 2012 it was re-launched as part of the exclusive collection available only in Paris. Thanks to Cristian I could wear both the original version and the modern, and I could compare them properly.

Settimana INCOM...merciale 1: Cinnabar (Estée Lauder, 1978)

Immagine

I've joined the game "La Settimana INCOM...merciale" (the game title is a play on words in Italian)  on the Adjiumi niche Forum : each participant was given some vintage perfumes, and now we're all wearing and reviewing them according to our opinions and tastes. Among the chosen scents Cristian (that is... Adjiumi himself) offered us some drops of   Cinnabar , composed in 1978 by Josephine Catapano with the help of Bernard Chant. Josephine Catapano , passed away in the spring of 2012 at age 93, was the author of some masterpieces such as Youth Dew (E. Lauder, 1953), Zen (Shiseido, 1964), Fidji (G. Laroche, 1966) and Norell (1969) but since she worked in the period when composers' names were kept undisclosed she never became a public figure, despite having been a prominent professional, held in high esteem by all insiders.

Musk e il nuovo Musk Extreme (Alyssa Ashley) 2/2

Immagine

Musk and New Musk Extreme (Alyssa Ashley) 2/2

(This post originates here) In the previous post I wrote the lineage of Alyssa Ashley's Musk is among the noblest, and I need to go back to post-revolutionary France to explain why.  At the end of XVIII century, Muscadins were a political movemen which many young French aristocrats belonged to. They used to wear sophisticated clothes, besides particularly recognisable and costly Musk scents. Even Josephine Bonaparte , future Empress of France, sympathized both with Muscadins and their passion for musk scents: in particular, she used to wear one composed by Houbigant, with an accord of bergamot, rose, violet on a base of musk and civet. Now we must fast forward to two centuries later, around 1968, when the great surrealist painter Enrico Donati, Italian but living in the U.S., met and married the heiress to the Houbigant family.
