Houbigant's new release: Ambre des Abysses (by Luca Maffei, 2023)

Immagine
I love that everything Houbigant creates shows consistency . First of all, consistency with the special history -three hundred years long- of this brand. Then, consistency with the personality and style of the people behind it, and with their personal vision of perfume: a vision that speaks of a sophisticated, serene, balanced, smiling kind of elegance. In a word: a happy one. Although Houbigant was born as a perfumer for the Royals at the time of Marie Antoinette, the perfumes it offers are not intended to affirm any idea of richness or beauty, nor to be noticed among others. They do not shout their presence all around. Perhaps, their success lies in the fact that they aim for happiness.  The happiness of those who create them, and the happiness of those wearing them. Happiness, in perfumery, is a rare quality. At Esxence I met their new Pivoine Souveraine  by Celine Ellena, a hymn to spring, at the center of which shines a floral accord as fresh, beautiful, and bright as a diamond

Musa Paradisiaca (Cristian Cavagna + Arturetto Landi for Cristian Cavagna, 2021)

Immagine
When I started writing this blog, almost fifteen years ago, Cristian had just opened Adjiumi , the forum that would soon become the most important portal for anyone in Italy interested in perfume. Since then we have spent endless hours discussing perfumes, brands, bottles, names, composers, raw materials, courses and everything revolving around perfumery. But honestly, I never thought that these pages, on which I commented and reviewed hundreds and hundreds of perfumes, would feature also his work. Yes, because today I'll write about " Musa Paradisiaca ", the first perfume of the " Cristian Cavagna " brand. Even just writing it, thrills me a lot. I like many things about this perfume. The first is that Cristian took all the time to create it based on his tastes and desires, and when a person works with an open heart, the result always exceeds expectations. The second is that Cristian entrusted his work to an Italian composer: Arturetto Landi , who has received m

L'Ossido and L'Angelo (Rossella Gatti - L'O Profumo 2017)

Immagine
When Rossella Gatti contacted me in order to send me her last two creations named " L'Ossido " and " L'Angelo"  I didn't know anything about her and her line L'O Profumo" ( website here ). However, I liked them both so much that now I'm obsessed with the idea of smelling all the others. L'Ossido (Oxide) is inspired by the smell of rust . That is, the rust that is at her home, because rust, in my house, unfortunately, smells differently. This one smells of cold spices, helycrisum, galbanum, incense, lavender and a curious note of roasted sesame that I did not know. All this bright, cold, dry, herbaceous accord, complements a magnificent rose oxide note, with its rosy, pungent metallic brightness and the geranium aspect. This note, which is rather difficult to tame, is perfectly balanced to take the center of the stage without altering everything else, and what's more, leads the whole accord to a higher octave . The resul

Digitalis and Mandrake (By David Apel and Carlos J Vinals for Les Potions Fatales)

Les Potions Fatales (website here ) is the name of a new line of fragrances inspired by plants such as datura, digitalis, mandrake, poppy, belladonna, hemlock... plants renowned for their healing, energizing, even aphrodisiac powers that, when used in excessive amounts, become lethal .  For centuries they have been used to ignite passion, to enhance energy, to cure diseases, but also to take out "cleanly" politicians, priests, noblemen, husbands and wives... In the end, the problem is always the amount you take, never the raw material itself, right? Even the sun kills you, if you get too much!  These plants, with their life/death duality, might be here to teach us sobriety, or the use without abuse (a much-needed lesson, isn't?) The idea of creating perfumes inspired by "lethal" plants is not completely new (think of " Datura Noir " by Serge Lutens, or Goutal's " Mandragore "), but it had never been used as inspiration for an

Francesca Dell'Oro Parfum: Ambrosine

Ambrosine (Francesca Dell'Oro Parfum)

Immagine
During fairs -but also in shops- I never resolved to test " Francesca Dell'Oro " line (website here) .   For me, the word "gold" (Dell'Oro means Golden) placed near any product indicates a poor thing, which by any other name would not sell; the marketing geniuses associate it to "gold" to be sure that at least the most stupid consumers will buy it. I then added gold to the fact that perfumes are bottled in expensive containers, and that presentation includes silk handkerchiefs and perfume cloche of bizarre shapes , and so I run away before sniffing anything. I was wrong. When I took time to meet Francesca, I found a real perfume aficionado. Francesca  knows perfumery well, and having also a marketing degree she knows how to make the most of what she does. Her main focus, however, is always on perfumes: speaking to one of the perfumers behind her fragrances I discovered she was greatly committed in the olfactory composition, too, which had to

I profumi di Rania J.: Rose Ishtar, Oud Assam, Jasmin Kama, Ambre Loup, Lavande 44, Tobacco Habanero

Immagine

A brand that I got to know in Florence during Pitti Fragranze was Rania J. (website here ) Rania Jouaneh namely, is both the founder of the brand and the composer beyond the fragrances. Rania, raised in Paris, has retained a taste for oriental perfumes and this is clearly reflected in her fragrances: rose, jasmine, spices and woods are treated like precious gems in a sumptuous, deep, intense, way, squeezing the juice to the last drop.  The fragrances in fact, are born to pay homage to the note referred to in the name: Rose Ishtar, Oud Assam, Jasmin Kama, Ambre Loup, Lavande 44, Tobacco Habanero . The scents are available in 50ml bottles of edp -eau de parfum- and possess all the characteristics that I associate with successful perfume : well estabilished on the skin, long living, with some degree of complexity and originality.   In short, they are beautifully crafted perfumes, without unnecessary frills around . Even the bottle has a nice shape and a pleasant texture to hol

Institut Tres Bien: Cologne à l'Italienne, Cologne à la Francaise, Cologne à la Russe

Immagine

When, few months ago, I was informed that Institut Tres Bien (website here ) had resumed production, and that I could buy again their three Cologne, the day immediately changed for the better. I have long owned the Cologne à la Francaise and that à l'Italienne  which I used to splash with pure bliss. Also the Cologne à la Russe used to exist but I had purchased the Très Russe , instead which was not a Cologne, and thus was even more intense and leathery. On Très Russe they are still working, but all three Cologne are available now. Triple hurray!!! They share the basic Cologne standards: sparkling citrus (bergamot, lemon, lime and cedar, plus neroli) and aromatic notes (lavender, rosemary, verbena). But the base notes are not exactly Cologne-like, because they feature an iris + benjoin  accord making them soft, velvety and slightly longer living than a standard Cologne: iris and benzoin are in fact used also like "fixatives" of other notes, allowing th

HomoElegans

Immagine

New Line: HomoElegans

Immagine
HomoElegans  (website here ) is the brand created last year by Francesco Gini (Gini Fragranze) and Maurizio Piazzi, lovers of all artistic, literary and musical expressions, convinced that fragrance, too is part of the way you see life and the world. The first two fragrances in the “HomoElegans” line, named " Tadzio " and " Quality of Flesh " were composed by Michele Marin of Infragranti Parfumeur who, for Gini Fragranze had already composed three beautiful candles ( here ). I was looking forward to trying these two perfumes, because I know Francesco Gini a bit, and I know he loves strong, exciting fragrances, and mostly because I know Michele Marin, too and I know he is at ease when he's allowed to use natural, rich-smelling raw materials, which he manages to expose the more intimate and less obvious facets . Given the name HomoElegans I was expecting something elegant/sophisticated, or something natural/outdoors-y. Instead, I was taken aback by two

Bogue Profumo: Maai e O/E

Immagine

(this post originates here ) MAAI was chosen as the scent of the main female character; it starts with an unusual green tuberose, bright, fresh, spicy, even rough, coupled with an animalic sambac jasmine . But the real surprise pops out after 30 minutes, when you think you understand who you are dealing with, and instead a classic chypre accord takes the scene with its shady, pungent, personality; its slightly leathery/smoked background joins the tuberose and transfigures it. The transition is not so slow: moments ago  you had sprayed Scarlett O'Hara and you find yourself holding hands with Rhett Butler ! This joke, which must not have been easy at all to do, put me in a good mood, I found it funny, I was struck and amazed (and this does not happen often), especially because it has not become a fragrant cacophony, but still remained interesting, original and above all, wearable. O/E , too, is strange and particular, a citrus/aromatic which lasts very much on the skin
