Bergamotto e Benzoino

Le note animali come Ambra Grigia, Musk, Zibetto, Castoreo… si usano ancora nella profumeria moderna? Oppure, da cosa sono state sostituite? Non esistendo una regolamentazione ufficiale per quanto riguarda l’impiego nei profumi di note animali, molti Paesi ne fanno ancora uso. Da noi in occidente però non vengono più utilizzate per motivazioni diverse, soprattutto di natura etica (vorreste indossare un profumo la cui produzione ha richiesto l’uccisione di un animale?) ma anche tecnica (difficoltà di reperibilità e quantità limitate =  costi elevatissimi). Abbiamo quindi annusato l’ Ambrarome (specialità di Synarome che sostituisce la tintura di ambra grigia- nota calda, con effetti cuoio mielato e una rimembranza di cisto labdano) e la Civette Odoressence (specialità di Robertet, nota molto vicina a quella proveniente dall’animale).

Are animal notes like Ambergris, Musk, Civet, Castoreum still used in modern perfumery? Since there’s no official regulation regarding the use of animal notes in perfumery, some countries are still using them. But in Europe and Americas their use has long been discontinued mainly for ethical reasons (would you wear a perfume whose production required killing an animal?) but also technical (limited quantities available=high costs). We then tested Ambrarome (Synarome specialty replacing the ambergris, with warm honey, leather effects and a remembrance of Cistus labdanum) and Civette Odoressence (Robertet specialty very close to the actual animal scent).

Il programma degli eventi della scorsa edizione di Esxence prevedeva alcuni incontri dal titolo “E’ vero che…? Miti e realtà del mondo dei profumi” . Gli incontri, organizzati e condotti da Maria Grazia Fornasier (fondatrice di Mouillettes& Co. ) con la mia collaborazione, nascevano da una riflessione di Maria Grazia: in rete e sulle riviste si trovano molte informazioni relative al profumo, ma tra falsi miti ed errori ricorrenti, tra traduzioni approssimative, ed espressioni gergali si rischia di riportare errori grossolani, che chi legge spesso non sa riconoscere e prende per buoni. Condividere informazioni corrette e spazzare via preconcetti antiquati, permette da un lato di facilitare la conversazione sui temi del profumo (allargando l’interesse e l’attenzione intorno alle fragranze), e dall’altro di creare una consapevolezza condivisa che renda possibile apprezzare le fragranze come “oggetti” anche culturali. Una volta all'anno nella città di Grasse si celebra la Giornata del Profumo, e sebbene quest'anno la data sia stata spostata di parecchie settimane, sono riuscita comunque a partecipare. Quest'anno l'evento era dedicato alla profumeria funzionale, ovvero ai profumi dei detergenti per la casa e per la persona. Negli stand le aziende essenziere di Grasse (Robertet, Charabot, Mane, Payan Bertran, Astier Demarest ecc) presentavano alcune delle loro produzioni sia naturali che sintetiche, che si trovano nei prodotti di uso quotidiano: l'Ambrox, il Verdox e la Galaxolide nei detersivi e negli ammorbidenti, il levo carvone nei dentifrici, citronnellile e diidromircenolo nei detersivi per i piatti, floralozone, aldeide C18 e C14 e gamma nonalactone per certi docciaschiuma, benzoino, neroli, sandalo, osmanto, eliotropina , per i profumatori d'ambiente, acetato di terpenile e geraniolo per le tavolette da WC... insomma una carrellata quasi infinita e molto interess

Once a year the city of Grasse celebrates the ”Perfume Day”, and although this year the date was moved several weeks, I could still participate, as usual. This year's event was dedicated to functional perfumery, that is perfumes for home and personal care detergents. Essence Companies located in Grasse (Robertet, Charabot, Mane, Payan Bertran, Astier Demarest etc.) showed some of their products, both natural and synthetic, that may be found in everyday products: ambrox, verdox and galaxolide for clothes detergents and softeners, levo-carvone in toothpaste, citronnellyle and dihydromyrcenol in dish detergent, floralozone, aldehyde C18 and C14 and gamma nonalactone for shower gels, benjoin, neroli, sandalwood, osmanthus, eliotropine for air fresheners, terpenyle acetate and geraniol for WC tablets... in short, a seemingly endless and very interesting overview on everything that we use everyday in our kitchen, bathroom, etc…

Martedì 3 maggio alle 11 presso lo spazio LiguriaStyle di Genova si svolgerà l’incontro-degustazione “ Pernambucco e Bergamotto. La cultura dei gusti e dei profumi ”, un vero e proprio viaggio multisensoriale fra storie, ricette e itinerari, con un focus sulla Liguria degli agrumi. A proposito di rose, nei giorni scorsi la mia amica Prisca mi ha inviato dall’Iran (ed esattamente da  Ghamsar), due generosissime fialette, una con dell’attar di rosa damascena, e l’altra con dell’essenza purissima .

About roses, again. A few days ago my friend Prisca sent me from Iran (and exactly from Ghamsar), two generous vials: one with damascus rose Attar, the other one with pure essence .

... non è che tutte queste rose mi uccideranno? Lo dico per tre buone ragioni: 1 - perchè sono arrivate alcune mail preoccupate e ironiche di amici, che capendo i miei  sforzi mi hanno  presa un pò in  giro  ;-) 2 - perchè si prevedono rose anche per domani: Prisca mi ha mandato dalla Persia qualcosa di esplosivo e non posso esimermi dal raccontarvelo. 3- perchè Andy (Tauer) mi ha dato una fialetta con la fragranza alla rosa su cui sta lavorando e quindi perchè non provarla proprio in questi giorni? Comunque, ecco le mie rose di oggi:

I'm saying this for three good reasons: 1 - because a couple of friends noticed my efforts and emailed me worried and ironic notes ;-) 2 - because it seems as if it'll be roses again, tomorrow: my friend Prisca sent me from Persia something really "explosive" rosewise, and I must tell everything. 3- Moreover, Andy (Tauer) gave me a small vial full of the rose fragrance he's working now, so why not trying it these days? Anyway, here are my roses for today:

Allora, come promesso oggi è stata una giornata interamente dedicata alle rose: di tutte le indicazioni arrivate ieri ho scelto  Voleur de Roses (L'Artisan Parfumeur)  per la mattina e  Lyric (Amouage) per oggi pomeriggio. E siccome sto preparando la lezione di giovedì prossimo da Caleri (sulla Rosa), sono andata in negozio e mi sono spruzzata (su cartina) Rose Noir di Byredo, Drole de Rose (L’Artisan Parfumeur) e L’Ombre dans l’Eau (Diptyque) come mi avevate suggerito. Insomma, oggi ho fatto il pieno.

As promised, today was devoted entirely to roses: among scents suggested yesterday I picked  Voleur de Roses (L'Artisan Parfumeur)  for this morning and  Lyric (Amouage) for the afternoon. And since I’m preparing next Thursday’s lesson at Caleri’s (which will be about Rose), I went into the store and sprayed on paper Rose Noir Byredo, Drole de Rose (L'Artisan Parfumeur) and L'Ombre dans l'Eau (Diptyque) as someone of you suggested. So, I was fully equipped.

Che ne dite di festeggiare il mese di maggio con un profumo alla rosa? E' vero, la Regina dei Fiori e io non andiamo particolarmente d'accordo, ma.... ci sono eccezioni. Domani (giovedì) e venerdì, ho deciso di indossare un profumo alla rosa. O uno che mi piace (...) o uno che magari non mi fa impazzire, ma lo indosso per ristudiarmelo un pò insieme a voi. Secondo voi cosa dovrei indossare? E voi, avete voglia di viaggiare con me tra le rose e indossare anche voi, per due giorni,  fragranze dominate da questa nota? Ho una bottiglietta con 5ml di olio essenziale di Bergamotto, e un'altra con del Benzoino (resinoide). Cioè, del Bergamotto e Benzoino. Suona familiare? I own a 5ml-bottle of Bergamot essential oil. And another one is full of Benjoin resinoid. That is, Bergamot and Benjoin. Sounds familiar?

Ieri mi è arrivato un regalo. Niente a che fare con la profumeria, è un oggetto che mi serve quando mi immergo (non scenderò in dettagli tecnici). La persona che me lo ha regalato mi ha spiegato che ha fatto un vero affare perché l’oggetto è di colore bianco, e quindi lo ha pagato la metà. Durante l’immersione, quest’aggeggio serve per segnalare se c’è qualcosa che non sta andando nel verso giusto, e mi avvisa se sto facendo qualcosa di pericoloso: a decine di metri sott’acqua, il fatto che l’aggeggio funzioni bene può fare persino la differenza tra la vita e la morte. Ma evidentemente, se è bianco, non lo vuole nessuno. La gente è pronta a pagare il doppio, per averlo nero. Una cosa a cui affidi la tua vita vale meno, se è del colore sbagliato. Yesterday I received a gift. Nothing to do with perfumery, it’s an object I need when I dive (no technical details added). The person who gave it to me me explained that it was a bargain because the object is white, and thus was paid a half. During the dive, this device indicates if something is going wrong, and warns me if I'm doing something dangerous: when you’re meters and meters under water, a malfunctioning device can even make the difference between life and death. But it seems as if it’s white, nobody wants it. People are willing to pay twice the price for the black version. Something you entrust your life to, is less valuable, if the color is wrong. Ieri ero in vena di pulizie. Ogni tanto mi prende quella che chiamo "la pulirella": sento un intenso desiderio che l'aria e la luce circolino meglio, così inizio al mattino e fino alla sera riordino, pulisco e soprattutto elimino. Mi chiedo se gli oggetti che ho intorno mi servono sul serio, e quando una cosa non l'ho usata per almeno 6 mesi, significa che non ne ho effettivamente bisogno. E la elimino. Alla fine della giornata la casa ha tutto un altro aspetto e l'ingresso si riempie di borse piene di libri, scarpe, vestiti, oggetti, videocassette, cd e quant'altro va messo di nuovo in circolo perchè ha fatto il mio tempo e ora potrebbe essere più utile a qualcun altro. Una delle cose che invece è finita nell'area "buttare nelle campane della raccolta differenziata" era un piccolo flacone di vetro trasparente, assolutamente anonimo, che credevo vuoto; l'ho messo lì e me ne sono dimenticata. Yesterday I was in the mood for cleaning. Every now and then I get into what I call "the pulirella-the cleaningstorm": I feel an intense need for air and light to circulate better, so I start in the morning and until evening I reorganize, clean up and trash or eliminate things. I ask myself if I really do need all the objects around me, and when I found an item I haven't used for 6 months, it means I don't actually need it. So I delete it from the scene. At the end of the day the house looks quite different and near the door are piled up bags full of books, shoes, clothes, objects, videotapes, cds and anything else should be put back into circulation because could be useful to someone else. Quando ho acquistato Terre de Sarment di Frapin, un paio di mesi fa, l'ho fatto di getto, affascinata da una nota particolare che avevo già sentito, ma mai bene e in evidenza come qui. Qualcosa di potente, con una personalità così forte che da sola bastava a suggerire l'idea del legno invecchiato, dentro cui ha riposato a lungo del cognac. Legno, canfora, caramello, frutta matura. La descrizione della fragranza evoca esattamente la sensazione che mi dà quella nota. Non sapevo cos'era, ma tutta la composizione vi ruota come intorno a un perno, in un modo così armonioso che per me era stata motivo sufficiente per comprare subito il profumo. Qualche giorno fa ho ordinato un altro quantitativo di molecoline sintetiche da studiare dal solito sito americano The Perfumer Apprentice, ed ero in attesa di ricevere la scatola con l'ordine. Oggi arrivo a casa, inizio ad aprire la scatola e... Bam! Quell'odore. Non dentro alla fragranza che mi piace tanto, ma da solo. Così preci
