Bergamotto e Benzoino

Il terzo studente di cui voglio parlare è Manuel Attardi. Anche lui ha frequentato l' Italian Perfumery Insitute l'anno scorso, ed ha appena lanciato il suo Brand “Manuel Attardi”, con una piccola collezione di tre profumi: “Pelle di Fauno - Extrait de Bete”, “Urano - Extrait Ciel”, “Ophélia - Extrait d'Amour” .  Ne parlerei anche se Manuel non fosse stato un mio studente, perchè la sua visione della profumeria mi piace: nelle sue creazioni percepisco una sensibilità estetica e culturale che rende le sue fragranze pulsanti, quasi vive.  La prima, “Pelle di Fauno - Extrait de Bete” ha una qualità secca, verde, agreste, cuoiata in maniera originale e sfidante. The third student I want to talk about today is Manuel Attardi .  He attended the Italian Perfumery Institute last year, and has just launched his brand new "Manuel Attardi" collection, with a trio of perfumes: " Pelle di Fauno - Extrait de Bete", "Urano - Extrait Ciel", "Ophélia - Extrait d'Amour" .  I would write about his work even if Manuel had not been my student, because I like his vision of perfumery. His creations mirror an aesthetic and cultural sensitivity that ignite life into his creations.  The first, "Pelle di Fauno - Extrait de Bete" is dry, green, herbal, with interesting suede nuancesl. I prossimi due giovani talenti dell'Italian Perfumery Institute di cui voglio scrivere sono Mattia Sorrentino ed Edda Salvadori . Edda e Matteo sono stati scelti dal brand italiano/cinese Jijide (link qui ) per raccontare una difficile scelta: spostarsi in un altro Paese per cercare fortuna, o restare, in un contesto sfidante, provando a realizzarsi nel proprio Paese?  E' praticamente la loro storia: due amici che devono scegliere il proprio futuro. Da un lato c'è Edda che, terminato il corso dell'Italian Perfumery Institute ha proseguito la sua formazione professionale a Parigi, presso l'Isipca, dall'altro c'è Mattia, che sta proseguendo il suo percorso in Italia.  I loro profumi “ Oltre ” e “ Dentro ” parlano di gioventù, di passione, di una tensione tra sogno e realtà, tra coraggio e zona confort , che mi ha emozionata.  I profumi sono belli entrambi, e per ora parlerò di " Dentro", creato da Mattia Sorrentino .  Note calde ed intense di cacao...

The two students of Italian Perfumery Institute I'm writing  about are Edda Salvadori and Mattia Sorrentino . Edda and Matteo are two young talents chosen by the Italian/Chinese brand Jijide  (link here ) to tell an engaging choice: move to another country to seek fortune, or stay in a difficult context, trying to achieve success in your own country?  It’s basically their story: two friends who had to choose their future. On one side there is Edda Salvadori who, after completing her course at the Italian Perfumery Institute, continued her professional training in Paris at the Isipca, and on the other side there is Mattia Sorrentino, who is continuing his career in Italy. Una delle maggiori gioie nell'insegnare presso l' Italian Perfumery Institute è quella di vedere gli studenti iniziare il loro percorso professionale nel mondo della profumeria.  Qualcuno, più interessato agli aspetti del marketing delle fragranze, del copywriting e della comunicazione, sta già lavorando. Anche altri che si occupano del controllo qualità delle materie prime, sono già inseriti in azienda. One of the greatest joys of teaching at the Italian Perfumery Institute is seeing students begin their professional journey in the world of perfumery.  Some of them, more interested in the marketing and communication aspects are already working. Others hold positions in raw materials quality control. Among those who are composing or evaluating fragrances, today I am writing about Mattia Sorrentino, Edda Salvadori, Diana Dobre and Manuel Attardi, who attended last year's " Fragrance Evaluator & Marketing Specialist. As any other scent by  Francesca Bianchi , also The Code of Emotions emerges slowly from the skin, expanding in space as formless and undefined as a cloud of steam. You feel like you've just awaken from a dream: you are sure it was a good dream, but you're able to grasp only senseless shreds. You feel like it delivered a message you had been waiting for so long, b ut your brain can’t rewind the thread. All you can do is savor that positive, reassuring, warm, almost optimistic feeling hovering inside of you.  The Code of Emotions is built upon a solid fougère accord with lavender and geranium, rounded and softened by some warm spice. An unobtrusive sweet-sour tropical fruits accord shines on top.  The whole is enclosed in an opalescent veil of milky notes and musks , radiating a delicate brightness all over the scent. Come quasi tutte le fragranze composte da Francesca Bianchi , anche The Code of Emotions emerge dalla pelle allargandosi nello spazio come vapore, senza contorni, né forme definite.  La sensazione è quella di svegliarsi da un sogno e non riuscire ad afferrarne che brandelli senza senso compiuto.  Hai la sensazione che sia stato un buon sogno. Sei sicura che racchiudesse un messaggio per te, un messaggio che stavi aspettando da tanto tempo.  Però il cervello fatica a riavvolgerne il filo, e tutto quello che puoi far e, è assaporare quella sensazione positiva, rassicurante, calda , costruttiva, quasi ottimista, che ti aleggia dentro. Alla base c'è un solido accordo fougère con lavanda e geranio, riscaldati e arrotondati da qualche spezia avvolgente. All'avvio, splende un accordo di frutti tropicali solo leggermente dolci-aciduli. La spugnatura è una delle più antiche tecniche di estrazione meccanica delle essenze agrumarie ; si tratta di un metodo manuale che richiede maestria e precisione, e sono pochi, ormai, gli artigiani che sono in grado di farlo.  Per spugnare (o “sfumare”) un agrume, si divide il frutto a metà . Attraverso un apposito attrezzo -una via di mezzo tra un coltello ed un cucchiaio, denominato “cavatore”- l'artigiano scodella via la polpa da ognuna delle due metà, lasciando integra la buccia . Questa viene poi piegata e pressata sopra una spugna naturale, che raccoglierà tutta l'essenza contenuta negli otricoli. Quando sarà completamente imbibita di essenza, la spugna verrà poi strizzata all'interno di un recipiente di coccio, e l'olio essenziale così ottenuto verrà lasciato decantare.  Ogni artigiano riesce a spugnare circa un quintale e mezzo di frutti al giorno, da cui si ricavano poco meno di 500 gr di essenza .  Se le essenze agrumarie si estraessero ancora in questo mo...

La spugnatura (which can be roughly translated into “sponging”) is one of the oldest extraction techniques of citrus essences ; it is a manual method requiring skill and extreme precision, and today only a few craftsmen are still able to do it.  To sponge citrus, the fruit is divided into two halves . Through a special tool -a middle way between a knife and a spoon, called "cavatore”- the artisan removes the pulp from each of the two halves, leaving the peel intact . This is then bent and pressed over a natural sponge , which will collect all the essence contained in the skin. When it is completely soaked with essence, the sponge will then be squeezed inside an earthenware vessel, and the essential oil thus obtained will be left to decant.  Each craftsman manages to sponge about a quintal and a half of fruits per day, from which a little less than 500 grams of essence can be obtained.  If citrus essences were still extracted in this way they would be more valuable than a...

In questo periodo sto indossando diversi profumi di Francesca Bianchi e devo ammettere che mi piacciono tutti, e tutti per lo stesso motivo: il contrasto assolutamente unico tra le formule ricche ed opulente, e una radianza gentile , mai opprimente.  Spiego meglio. I profumi di Francesca condividono tutti delle textures morbide e ricche; sono fragranze complesse, multisfacettate, arricchite da materie prime ricercatissime, capaci di offrire una tridimensionalità impareggiabile .  Hanno presenza. Respirano, come animali vivi.  Eppure, tutta questa ricchezza, tutta questa vitalità esuberante e sensuale, non urla.  Se questi stessi profumi -uguali identici- fossero stati composti negli anni '80 nessuno avrebbe potuto avvicinarsi, perchè il loro ruggito avrebbe stecchito chiunque a metri di distanza. Invece Francesca riesce a farli emergere dalla pelle sovrapponendo sfumatura a sfumatura , senza strafare, cesellando le sensazioni al millimentro perchè giungano all'olfa...

In these weeks I’m wearing a selection of Francesca Bianchi ’s perfumes.  I must admit I like them all, and all for the same reason: the absolutely unique contrast between rich and opulent formulas, and a gentle, never overwhelming radiance . Francesca likes rich textures; her scents are complex, multi-faceted, and enriched with precious raw materials offering an incomparable three-dimensionality.  They have a presence.  They breathe, like living animals .  Yet, all this richness, all this exuberant and sensual vitality, doesn’t scream. If these same -identical- scents had been composed in the 80s, their roar would have dried anyone meters away.  Instead, Francesca manages to make them emerge from the skin overlapping nuance after nuance with rare subtlety ; chiseling the sensations to gently reach the nose, layering wave after wave. The result is like slowly resurfacing from a dream. They remind me of Leonardo’s Madonnas: never a sharp outline, or a pop light...

Thanks to its lightweight alloy and silent motor, this latest-generation cyborg is designed to move as gracefully as a geisha .  The metal shell is covered in ultrasophisticated latex, with a snowy-blushy complexion and a velvety, fresh texture. I love that everything Houbigant creates shows consistency . First of all, consistency with the special history -three hundred years long- of this brand. Then, consistency with the personality and style of the people behind it, and with their personal vision of perfume: a vision that speaks of a sophisticated, serene, balanced, smiling kind of elegance. In a word: a happy one. Although Houbigant was born as a perfumer for the Royals at the time of Marie Antoinette, the perfumes it offers are not intended to affirm any idea of richness or beauty, nor to be noticed among others. They do not shout their presence all around. Perhaps, their success lies in the fact that they aim for happiness.  The happiness of those who create them, and the happiness of those wearing them. Happiness, in perfumery, is a rare quality. Amo il fatto che tutto quello che esce da Houbigant mostri coerenza . Innanzitutto con la storia speciale -lunga oltre trecento anni- di questo marchio.  Poi, coerenza con la personalità e lo stile delle persone che ci sono dietro, e con la loro visione del profumo: una visione che parla di eleganza sofisticata, serena, equilibrata, sorridente. In una parola: felice. Sì, perché sebbene Houbigant nasca come profumiere della famiglia Reale ai tempi di Maria Antonietta, i profumi che offre non intendono affermare un'idea di ricchezza o di avvenenza, nè farti notare in mezzo agli altri. Non gridano la loro presenza tutt'attorno. Forse, il loro successo risiede nel fatto che, da sempre, mirino alla felicità . Gli anni '70 furono un periodo eccezionale dal punto di vista creativo ed artistico: la musica, la letteratura, il design, la profumeria... Eppure, furono anche impegnativi, con la guerra fredda, il Vietnam, il terrorismo e mille altre rivoluzioni di ordine politico e sociale. Ci voleva un'esorbitante quantitavo di Eros , per bilanciare tutto quel Tanathos, e la generazione che aveva vent'anni allora, ce la mise tutta per dare una chance alla pace, per mettere fiori dentro i cannoni, e per fare l'amore più che poteva.  Come sottofondo olfattivo a tutta questa esplosione vitale c'era il patchouli , con la sua nota calda, avvolgente, radicante, sfacciatamente sensuale. La nuova uscita di Uermì, 70's Mood mi è piaciuto per molte ragioni, tra le quale spicca la totale coerenza col nome che porta : un omaggio a quel concentrato di colori accesi, spirito ribelle e creatività esuberante che ha caratterizzato l'atmosfera di quel decennio. From a creative point of view, the 70s was an exceptional decade : music, literature, design, and perfumery... of course, it was also challenging, with the cold war, Vietnam, terrorism, and another thousand or so political and social revolutions taking place all together.  It took an exorbitant amount of Eros to counterbalance all this Tanathos, and that generation did everything they could to give peace a chance, put flowers in their cannons, and make love as much as possible.  The olfactory background of this vital explosion was patchouli , with its warm, enveloping, rooting, brazenly sensual woody note. Among the reasons to love Uermì's new release named “70’s Mood”, there is the perfect consistency of the name it bears : a tribute to that concentration of bright colors, rebellious spirit, and enlivening creativity that characterized the atmosphere of that decade.  It is definitely NOT a tribute to the perfumes of those years -otherwise, it would have never worked in ...

Vetiver is duality made plant.  The visible part is a bright green shrub whose long and thin leaves point towards the sky. The invisible part is a huge taproot embracing Mother Earth with such an exceptional vigor, difficult to overcome.  Evidently, vetiver's essence, too, expresses the same duality -and Java vetiver even better than any other type. On the one hand, you smell the freshness, the clarity of a cold winter day, the “push” upwards , to touch Heavens. On the other hand, there's the woody-green, dry, earthy, warm, smoked facet, endowed with the primitive and unconscious elegance of wild creatures. You smell the powerful roots, the effort of freeing them from Mother Earth's embrace, to clean them, to dry them, to work them... the work of man, his desire to take possession of such an intense and intimate embrace, to feel wrapped in it.  Capturing both these polarities is not easy; the composer must be able to listen deeply to the rew materials, and build a visce...

Il Vetiver è la dualità fatta pianta .  La parte visibile è un arbusto dalle foglie lunghe e sottili, che puntano verso il Cielo. Quella invisibile è un grosso fittone che raggiunge il cuore di Madre Terra e l'abbraccia con un vigore eccezionale, difficile da vincere.
