Nuovo: Aedes de Venustas

Immagine

One of the launches that most struck me during Esxence exhibition is Aedes de Venustas, a fragrance created for the U.S. Based perfumery store bearing the same name. After years dedicated to offering the New York public artistic and unconventional perfumes, the owners decided to take a step further, creating a composition for their own brand, and involved Bertrand Duchaufour in the project. Through collaborations with such diverse brands (L'Artisan Parfumeur, Acqua di Parma, Neela Vermeire, Aedes, etc.), Bertrand is proposing consistently exceptional fragrances, among the best things you can smell around; challenging, vibrant, unexpected, and often, loved first sniff. Even when it's about another orange blossom or oud scent ( Seville à l'Aube  in L'Artisan line or Neela Vermeire's Trayee -soon reviewed here-), his way of interpreting the brief makes them unusual and interesting. Probably Bertrand's best quality is listening , and in fact his most successful

Chinotto in Fiore (Abaton)

Immagine

Chinotto, a kind of bitter orange, is a beautiful, intensely golden citrus fruit, especially used in gardens as an ornamental plant, due to its fragrant and abundant flowers. I knew the history of Chinotto in the city of Savona is important, because the “canditori” (confiteurs) had been able to find a way to transform its extremely bitter fruits into delicacies to be enjoyed at the table, which were appreciated throughout Europe throughout the '800 and beginning of' 900. But in addition to eating it, Chinotto may be enjoyed a drink, characterized by an aromatic, energizing taste. I suggest you to try the one by Lurisia (leftside pic, website here ): I always keep a couple of bottles home, as my husband is very fond of it.

There are times when everything seem to choose the wrong turn. Days, weeks, even months, in which you're far from ok, since diseases (sometimes just a simple flu), allergies, insomnia, worries about the job and the people you love slow you down, sap your energy, keep you from dedicating serenely to your everyday life and projects. You seem to plod, you feel out of sync with the rest of the world. You look in the mirror and see yourself thin, suffered, you've never seen such huge dark circles around your eyes before. Your humor falls to historic lows, and you're afraid of not being able to get out from there. But then, somehow, it happens.

Seville à l'Aube (B. Duchaufour/D.Beaulieu per L'Artisan Parfumeur, 2012)

Immagine

French blogger Denyse Beaulieu, better known as Grain de Musc , has just published a memoir on perfume titled " The Perfume Lover ". Next to the book, and to tell the olfactory memory of a magical sunrise in Seville, L'Artisan Parfumeur has given her the opportunity to work with Bertrand Duchaufour to compose just the smell of that magical moment. I am speaking of the scent because I received a small decant and I've been wearing  it for several days, and now I look forward to be in July to buy it. I must admit I have a very soft spot for orange blossoms. I like both the fresher facet, typical of neroli, and the heavier, indolic notes of heart/base, characteristics of orange blossom absolute. But I'm not fond of having all of them together. Although there are perfumes exploring the note in all its complexity, which necessarily are almost soliflore (this note is difficult to treat, since tends to overwhelm all others), as the beautiful Prada's Fleur d'

The "good" scent 2

(this post originates here ) Perfumery is a difficult art to tell. The least thing you can say is that generally we lack appropriate words . Smelling a bouquet and saying, "This fragrance contains such and such a note, and although the structure of the composition is substantially correct and expressing itself at full, and the raw materials sufficiently interesting, I don't actually smell the values of the brand" is not something you can invent. You need to study a lot, attend specialized courses, learn both raw materials and molecules, try to compose on your own to learn how notes interact, and constantly exchange views and information with those who know more than you (and often you'll find that your readers provide you the most interesting lessons!).
