Bergamotto e Benzoino

"Per creare questa nuova fragranza alla rosa ho cercato di non pensare a tutto quello che già esiste, che è stato già detto sul tema della rosa. Volevo che fosse tenera, nel senso di luminosa e ingenua , non volevo che uscisse il lato troppo conturbante e femminile del fiore". Una delle fragranze che mi hanno particolarmente colpita durante Pitti Immagine Fragranze è stata la nuova creazione di Olivier Durbano: Rose Quartz.

Traduction Française plus bas! "To create this new fragrance based on rose, I tried not to think of everything already said and done about this flower. I wanted it tender, in the sense of light and naive , I wasn't interested in exploring the sensual, opulent or feminine side of it". A fragrance that particularly impressed me at Pitti Fragrances is the new creation by Olivier Durbano: Quartz Rose.

Durante le giornate di Pitti Immagine Fragranze Maria Candida Gentile ha presentato le sue due nuove fragranze: Hanbury e Barry Lyndon , che ho trovato entrambe interessanti. Nelle sue nuove creazioni  Maria Candida abbandona momentaneamente il suo amato incenso, le strutture opulente e "tattili" a favore di composizioni più serene, luminose, ottimiste senza nessun angolo buio. Soprattutto in Hanbury, la fragranza ispirata ai giardini di Villa Hanbury a Ventimiglia.

During the days of Pitti Immagine Fragranze, Maria Candida Gentile presented her two new launches: Hanbury and Barry Lyndon . I found both interesting: Maria Candida seems to having temporarily given up her beloved incense and rich structures, opulent in an almost "tactile" way, in favour of more serene, bright compositions, optimistic without any dark corner. Especially Hanbury, the fragrance inspired by the gardens of Villa Hanbury in Ventimiglia (Ligurian Riviera).

Ma la sorpresa più bella di Pitti immagine Fragranze in realtà è stata un'altra; aver potuto conoscere Sissel Tolaas. Scienziata  impegnata da anni nei temi dell'odore, la Dr.a Tolaas è arrivata a Firenze con un'installazione odorosa assolutamente fuori dall'ordinario: una parete completamente bianca in cui sono state inserite delle molecole di odore . Per essere precisi, odore di un giovanotto in preda ad un attacco di paura. Avvicinandosi al muro bianco e grattando, le molecole venivano rilasciate nell'aria ed era possibile precepire un odore acre, un sudore caldo e speziato, pungente, decisamente fastidioso (davanti al muro vedete i miei amici dell'Adjiumi Niche Perfumes).

But the best surprise at Pitti Immagine Fragranze was another: Sissel Tolaas. Scientist engaged in smell issues for years,  Dr.Tolaas arrived in Florence with a fragrant installation absolutely out of the ordinary: a plain white wall in which odor molecules were inserted. To be precise, the smell of a young man panicking . To release the odor you scratched the wall and started perceiving an acrid smell, of hot, spicy sweat, pungent and very annoying (in the picture, my friends from Adjiumi Niche Perfumes).

Sto raccogliendo gli appunti di questi tre giorni a Pitti Immagine Fragranze per preparare una serie di post su: - Le due nuove uscite dell'Artisan Parfumeur: Traversèe du Bosphore e Coeur de vetiver Sacrè . Sono rimasta colpitissima soprattutto dal vetiver: speziato caldo e in un certo modo sensuale, meno vetiver di quello che il nome lascerebbe intuire. - Quartz Rose di Olivier Durbano , una fragranza alla rosa che mi ha letteralmente incantata: delicata ed eterea, considerabile come la "sorellina" ingenua e ancora non "sensualmente corrotta" dei 5 fratelli adulti.

I'm collecting notes I wrote during the last 3 days at Pitti Immagine Fragranze, and I'm preparing a series of posts which will deal with scents I liked: - the two new releases by Artisan Parfumeur: Traversèe du Bosphore and Coeur de vetiver Sacré . The vetiver strikes for its spiciness, sensual in an odd way, much less vetiver-ial than what the name suggests. - Rose Quartz by Olivier Durbano , a rose fragrance that enchanted me with its delicate and ethereal touch; like a sort of "little sister" -still naive and not yet "sensually corrupt"- of her grown up siblings of the line.

Il ricco programa di Pitti Immagine Fragranze prevedeva, tra gli altri eventi, anche uno che attendevo con particolare emozione: la presentazione del mio libro, "L'Arte del Profumo" edito da Castelvecchi , arrivato in questi giorni in libreria. Non ve ne ho parlato prima perchè non ci sono riuscita, così ve ne parlo ora. Il volume è strutturato come un manuale che accompagna il lettore alla scoperta del linguaggio del profumo, aiutandolo ad educare l'olfatto con suggerimenti, stimoli, percorsi profumati tra le note.

The rich program scheduled for Pitti Immagine Fragranze days included, among other events, one which I was awaiting with particular thrill: the presentation of my book, "The Art of Perfume" published by Italian publisher Castelvecchi and just arrived in bookstores. I haven't written anything of it before because I didn't succeed, so I'm telling you now.  The book is designed like a manual taking es the reader to discover the fragrance world, helping to educate the nose with suggestions, stimuli, scent paths to walk around notes.

Quest'anno, per la giornata aperta al pubblico di Pitti immagine Fragranze (sito qui ), che si svolgerà a Firenze presso la Stazione Leoppolda da venerdì 10 a domenica 12, gli amici dell' Adjiumi Niche Forum e io abbiamo deciso di non proporvi un programma dettagliato. Abbiamo preferito fissare solo tre appuntamenti, tre occasioni per incontrarci ed annusare insieme alcune novità. Durante il resto della giornata ognuno sarà libero di esplorare gli stand nell'ordine che preferisce, con la massima libertà. Ci è sembrato un buon compromesso tra la voglia di incontrarsi e stare insieme, e l'impulso irresistibile di galoppare a briglia sicolta tra gli stand, un impulso che ci prende tutti (noi compresi) non appena -terminata la registrazione- si varca la soglia e si entra in quel magico mondo. Ero in Francia, e dopo una settimana di natura incontaminata e profumi selvaggi sentivo il bisogno di un pò di profumo artificiale. Mi ero portata una dozzina di fialette da provare in mezzo ai boschi (poi vi parlerò dei due Kilian che mi sono piaciuti e dei due Kurkdjian su cui sto ancora meditando), ma le fialette non bastavano, ci voleva un rinforzino, così sono entrata in una profumeria normale. E ho scoperto che Bleu , il nuovo maschile di Chanel, in Francia è già uscito. Triplo evviva!

I was spending a week in France, and after 7-days-7 of wild, natural scents of sea, woods, horses etc. I felt I needed something composed by mankind. Yes, I'd brought a dozen vials with me to test (and I’ll write about the two Kilian I liked and the two Kurkdjian I'm still pondering), but the vials were not enough, I still needed reinforce, so I got into a perfume shop. And I discovered that Bleu in France has already been launched. Triple hooray!

In queste ultime due settimane ho potuto indossare con calma i tre nuovi profumi di Mona di Orio, della nuova linea “ Les Nombres D’Or ”: Cuir, Ambre, Musc , che arriveranno nei negozi solo a settembre (ma chi era con me ad Esxence lo scorso marzo, si ricorderà di averne sentito un’anticipazione).

These last two weeks I’ve been wearing the three new scents by Mona di Orio of " Les Nombres d'Or" new line: Cuir, Ambre, Musc , which will be in stores next September (but friends who were with me during Esxence, last March, have already had a thrilling preview...).

Da venerdì 10 settembre a domenica 12, alla Stazione Leopolda (Firenze) avrà luogo l'ottava edizione di Pitti Immagine Fragranze, il salone dedicato alla profumeria artistica. Quest'anno saranno presenti circa 160 marchi, con tutti i protagonisti del mondo del profumo. La giornata di apertura per il pubblico è prevista per il sabato (11). E ora veniamo al profumo: Les Ailes du Dèsir è una fragranza essenzialmente fiorita/cuoiata , perfetta tanto sulla pelle femminile che su quella maschile. Preziosissima, nel senso che presenta alcune materie prime di particolare pregio, che in effetti, indossate, fanno la differenza. In apertura si avverte una potente nota alcolica, che Bertrand avrebbe desiderato fosse cognac;  ma poichè  l’assoluta di cognac non interagiva bene con lo sviluppo successivo della composizione è stata sostituita con una preziosa assoluta di rum (tra i 6 e gli 11mila euro al kg).

And now the scent: Les Ailes du Désir is essentially a floral-leathery fragrance , perfect on both male and female skin. It offers some raw materials of high value, that in fact, when you wear the fragrance, make the difference. At the opening you smell a powerful alcoholic note that Bertrand would have liked Cognac, but which didn't interact well with the later development of the composition and so was replaced by a precious rum absolute (6-11 thousand euros per kg).

Qualche settimana fa, Stefania e Massimo di Nobile 1942 , che oltre ai loro profumi distribuiscono anche altri marchi mi avevano invitata ad andare con loro al castello di Fontpinot, nella regione della Grande Champagne, in Francia, per la presentazione del nuovo profumo di Frapin (i Frapin producono un prezioso Cognac fin dal 1270: qui il loro sito , io ne ho parlato più volte, tra cui  qui ). L’idea di trascorrere una giornata al Castello tra vigneti, botti e profumi mi piaceva già moltissimo, poi Stefania, che conosce i miei gusti, mi ci aveva aggiunto il carico da 11: “Guarda che DEVI venire: so già che il profumo ti piacerà molto, e il compositore… so che apprezzi molto il suo lavoro, e avrai la possibilità di passare un po’ di tempo con lui”.

A few weeks ago Stefania and Massimo of Nobile 1942 who, in addition to the fragrances they make also distribute in Italy other brands, invited me to join them to the Fontpinot castle in the Grande Champagne region of France, for the presentation of the new Frapin scent (Frapin produces an extremely valuable Cognac since 1270: here their site , I spoke about them many times, f.e. here ). The idea of a day at the castle visiting vineyards, tasting precious wines and fragrances already won me over, then Stefania, who knows my tastes, added the key factor: "Look, you have to come: I’m sure you’ll like the scent a lot, and the composer... I know that you greatly appreciate his previous works, and you’ll have the chance to spend some time with him".

Oggi pomeriggio ero in giro con Anna e abbiamo deciso di fare un giretto in profumeria. Così ho potuto riprovare l’Eau Serge Lutens, di nuovo sulla pelle. E’ una fragranza dominata dalle note fresche e metalliche delle aldeidi, da diversi tipi di muschio bianco e dalle note secche ed ozoniche di alcune molecole del tipo “nuova freschezza” (sapete quelle che non si possono chiamare “detersivo” perché fa brutto? Ecco, quelle. Ma in ogni caso suggeriscono un’idea, quindi non ci trovo niente di sconveniente nell’usarle, se si è in grado di garantirgli dignità, come in questo caso). Insomma, chiamatele un po’ come volete: sono tutte lì e scintillano come raggi di sole sulla neve. Prima di continuare a leggere, però, vi suggerisco di dare un'occhiata alla videopresentazione del profumo .

This afternoon I was out with AnnaMaria and we decided to get to a perfumery store to try again l’Eau de Lutens, again on skin. The fragrance is dominated by the fresh, metallic feeling of aldehydes, clean notes of the "white musk" kind, and by other dry, ozonic notes of the "new freshness" kind (d’you know those molecules that cannot be called "detergent" because it sounds bad and disrespectful? Exactly those. In any case, they do convey an idea, so I see nothing wrong in using them if you are able to allow them dignity, as in this case). P lease, before reading on, look at this videopresentation of the perfume , because it will make some concepts clearer.

Ad Esxence James Heeley aveva presentato la sua nuova fragranza " Oranges & Lemons say the bells of St. Clement's ", ma io non ero riuscita a provarla, e quindi non ne avevo scritto niente. Nei giorni scorsi però, finalmente ho potuto indossarlo con calma e farmene un'idea. E l'ho apprezzato molto. Si tratta essenzialmente di una fragranza agrumata, con arancia, limone, bergamotto, mandarino, neroli, petitgrain, tè "Earl Grey", ylang ylang e vetiver.

During  Esxence Exhibition in Milan, James Heeley presented his new fragrance " Oranges & Lemons say the bells of St. Clement's ", but unfortunately I was unable to try it, so I wrote nothing about it. But in these last few days I finally got to wear it and I could appreciate it, so here I am. This is essentially a citrus fragrance, featuring orange, lemon, bergamot, mandarin, neroli, petitgrain, "Earl Grey" tea, ylang ylang and vetiver.

Avevo a lungo sentito parlare di questo profumo, creato da Victoire Gobin Daudè, una giovane e talentuosa compositrice francese, attiva solo tra il 2002 e il 2005. Le sue cinque creazioni ( Sous le Buis, Biche dans l'Absinthe, Jardins Ottomans, Nuit au Désert, Sève Exquise ), di cui oggi si trovano rarissimi esemplari, a prezzi proibitivi, sono rimaste leggendarie. Un pò come quando un cantautore giovane realizza uno, due album pieni di poesia e di eccezionale talento e poi muore, lasciando rimpianto ed amarezza per quello che avrebbe potuto essere il suo contributo alla musica, che invece è andato perso. Un pò come Jeff Buckley, insomma. Perchè lei, almeno per ora, non compone più.

I had heard wonders about this fragrance, created by Victoire Gobin Daudè, a talented young French composer, active between 2002 and 2005. Her five creations ( Sous le Buis, Biche dans l'Absinthe, Jardins Ottomans, Nuit au Désert, Sève Exquise ), now very rarely found and at prohibitive prices, are something "legendary". A bit like when a young, talented singer makes one, two albums of truly exceptional beauty and then dies, leaving us regretful for having lost his precious contribution to music. A bit like Jeff Buckley, in fact. Because Victoire, at least for now, is no longer composing.

Questo post inizia qui Gershwin ed Exultat sono i due che invece presentano una piramide più classica. Gershwin è un omaggio alla famosa “Rapsodia in Blu” del compositore americano, ed è essenzialmente un agrumato, con olii essenziali (limone, arancio amaro, pompelmo) di primissima qualità, a cui si affianca un incenso molto raffinato, luminoso, con note metalliche e asciutte che si legano bene agli agrumi e che restano a lungo sulla pelle dopo che gli agrumi sono evaporati.

This post originates here Gershwin and Exultat are the two that, instead, show a more traditional pyramid. Gershwin is a tribute to the famous "Rhapsody in Blue" by the American composer, and is essentially a citrus scent. Essential oils (lemon, bitter orange, grapefruit) of the highest quality, and they are flanked by a very bright incense with a dry, metallic undertone that binds well citrus and remains on the skin long after that citrus fruits are evaporated.

Qualche mese fa ricevetti un’email in cui Maria Candida Gentile mi chiedeva: “Ma perché non parli mai delle fragranze della mia linea? Non le conosci? Posso mandartene dei samples.  Oppure... forse è perché non ti piacciono?” Io le risposi che non le conoscevo abbastanza bene per scriverne. Per di più, in passato avevo sentito un paio di fragranze che lei aveva composto sotto il brief di un’azienda-cliente, e poiché non mi avevano raccontato niente di speciale, avevo ritenuto che l’autrice non avesse argomenti. Invece mi sbagliavo, probabilmente le ragioni erano da ricercare dall’altra parte, perché quelle che ha composto per sé sono davvero belle, ed esprimono un gusto molto personale, frutto di una sensibilità ed una ricerca stilistica ben percepibili.

Some months ago I received an email from Maria Candida Gentile, who asked me: "You never speak of my line of fragrances: Don’t you know it? In this case can send you samples. Or... maybe it's because you don’t like it?" I answered I didn’t know the scents well enough to write about them. Moreover, in the past I smelt a couple of fragrances she had composed under a client’s brief, and since they were completely uninteresting to me, I assumed the author had no arguments. And I was wrong: the reasons were probably to be found on the other side, because fragrances she made for her personal line are really beautiful, expressing a sound personal taste, the result of a sensitivity and stylistic research that you "feel".

Scusatemi se vi ho fatto aspettare, è stata un settimana intensissima e sono andata un pò lunga senza accorgermene. Ieri sera ho fatto l'estrazione (in maniera artigianale: ho scritto i nomi su dei bigliettini). Quindi rullate i tamburi, perchè vincono una bottiglia di Orange Star: Marcopietro ed Ela! A proposito di rose, nei giorni scorsi la mia amica Prisca mi ha inviato dall’Iran (ed esattamente da  Ghamsar), due generosissime fialette, una con dell’attar di rosa damascena, e l’altra con dell’essenza purissima .

About roses, again. A few days ago my friend Prisca sent me from Iran (and exactly from Ghamsar), two generous vials: one with damascus rose Attar, the other one with pure essence .

... non è che tutte queste rose mi uccideranno? Lo dico per tre buone ragioni: 1 - perchè sono arrivate alcune mail preoccupate e ironiche di amici, che capendo i miei  sforzi mi hanno  presa un pò in  giro  ;-) 2 - perchè si prevedono rose anche per domani: Prisca mi ha mandato dalla Persia qualcosa di esplosivo e non posso esimermi dal raccontarvelo. 3- perchè Andy (Tauer) mi ha dato una fialetta con la fragranza alla rosa su cui sta lavorando e quindi perchè non provarla proprio in questi giorni? Comunque, ecco le mie rose di oggi:

... hope all these roses aren't going to kill me! I'm saying this for three good reasons: 1 - because a couple of friends noticed my efforts and emailed me worried and ironic notes ;-) 2 - because it seems as if it'll be roses again, tomorrow: my friend Prisca sent me from Persia something really "explosive" rosewise, and I must tell everything. 3- Moreover, Andy (Tauer) gave me a small vial full of the rose fragrance he's working now, so why not trying it these days? Anyway, here are my roses for today:

Allora, come promesso oggi è stata una giornata interamente dedicata alle rose: di tutte le indicazioni arrivate ieri ho scelto  Voleur de Roses (L'Artisan Parfumeur)  per la mattina e  Lyric (Amouage) per oggi pomeriggio. E siccome sto preparando la lezione di giovedì prossimo da Caleri (sulla Rosa), sono andata in negozio e mi sono spruzzata (su cartina) Rose Noir di Byredo, Drole de Rose (L’Artisan Parfumeur) e L’Ombre dans l’Eau (Diptyque) come mi avevate suggerito. Insomma, oggi ho fatto il pieno.

As promised, today was devoted entirely to roses: among scents suggested yesterday I picked  Voleur de Roses (L'Artisan Parfumeur)  for this morning and  Lyric (Amouage) for the afternoon. And since I’m preparing next Thursday’s lesson at Caleri’s (which will be about Rose), I went into the store and sprayed on paper Rose Noir Byredo, Drole de Rose (L'Artisan Parfumeur) and L'Ombre dans l'Eau (Diptyque) as someone of you suggested. So, I was fully equipped.

Che ne dite di festeggiare il mese di maggio con un profumo alla rosa? E' vero, la Regina dei Fiori e io non andiamo particolarmente d'accordo, ma.... ci sono eccezioni. Domani (giovedì) e venerdì, ho deciso di indossare un profumo alla rosa. O uno che mi piace (...) o uno che magari non mi fa impazzire, ma lo indosso per ristudiarmelo un pò insieme a voi. Secondo voi cosa dovrei indossare? E voi, avete voglia di viaggiare con me tra le rose e indossare anche voi, per due giorni,  fragranze dominate da questa nota? What about celebrating the month of May with a rose bouquet? Ok, the Queen of Flowers and I don' get along particularly well, but... there are exceptions. Tomorrow (Thursday) and Friday, I am wearing a rose fragrance. Sarà che finalmente la primavera è arrivata e il sole si sta scaldando come piace a me, sarà che la pianta di limoni sul terrazzo è tutta in fiore, insomma, evidentemente a mio marito dev'essere venuta voglia di  fiordarancio. E infatti in questi giorni  mi ha svuotato la fialetta-prova di Orange Star (ne avevo parlato qui ), dandomi modo di averla intorno per una settimana e quindi di capirla per bene. La piramide recita mandarino, clementina, fiordarancio, violetta, ambra grigia, vaniglia e patchouli. L'avvio è ricco di sensazioni fruttate di agrumi zuccherini, resi intensi dal fiordarancio: un'avvio euforizzante, così vivace da dare alla testa. Nel cuore percepisco una sensazione speziata (penso possano essere chiodi di garofano), ed una saponosa e pulitissima (aldeidi?). Poi la fragranza prende una morbida piega legnosa-polverosa verso il finale, ore dopo. La durata è davvero eccezionale, tutta la giornata sulla pelle, di più sui vestiti. Anche la proiezione è buona, e

Ricevo quest'invito da Mouillettes&Co. e volentieri lo pubblico: "Siamo rimasti molto colpiti dalla grande passione per il mondo del profumo che abbiamo riscontrato in tutti coloro che sono intervenuti ad Esxence, che conferma le richieste pervenuteci in questi anni.  Per soddisfare passioni ed esigenze emerse durante gli incontri con il pubblico ed offrire la massima flessibilità di partecipazione, abbiamo programmato una edizione speciale di "UNA GIORNATA DA "NASO" in due date consecutive, 21 maggio (a Milano) e 22 maggio 2010 (sabato!) a Castelletto Ticino. Un vero, verissimo profumo al vetiver per amanti del vetiver. Prodotto in soli 80 flaconi ed esaurito subito, questa meraviglia di profumo è l'esercizio n.1 di Isabelle Doyen con il vetiver. Il prossimo  autunno Les Nez farà uscire altre 100 boccette con l'esercizio n.2, una fragranza diversa che esplorerà altri aspetti di questa stessa nota. Ma torniamo all'esercizio n.1, il Turtle Vetiver. Ho potuto testarlo grazie a Renè Schifferle, vulcanico creatore del marchio Les Nez , che ho incontrato a Milano, durante Esxence.

A true-to life vetiver, for real vetiver freaks. Produced in just 80 bottles and immediately sold out, this marvel of perfume is the exercise No.1 by Isabelle Doyen with vetiver. Next autumn Les Nez will release another batch of  100 bottles with exercise No.2, a different fragrance exploring other aspects of this same note. But back to exercise # 1: I could test it due to kind Mr. Renè Schifferle , volcanic creator of the brand Les Nez, whom I met in Milan, at Esxence Exhibition.

La primavera sembra finalmente essere arrivata. Le ultime due fragranze esplorate con la guida di Patricia de Nicolai sono state Nuit de Noel (1922), Ernest Daltroff per Caron e Iris Gris , di Vincent Roubert per Jacques Fath. La prima conteneva una specialità "Mousse de Saxe" (una specialità di De Laire un laboratorio di materie prime a Parigi) e una molecola sintetica che venne usata spesso nei decenni seguenti, l'isobutilchinoleina dai risvolti cuoiati e fumosi.

The last two fragrances explored with the guidance of Patricia de Nicolai were Nuit de Noel (1922), by Ernest Daltroff (Caron) and Iris Gris by Vincent Roubert for Jacques Fath. Nuit de Noel contained mousse de Saxe (a specialty by De Laire, a raw material lab located in Paris) and a synthetic molecule that was often used in the following decades: isobutilquinolin, with its leather and smoky, harsh note.

Piver del 1896 (a sinistra una foto fatta al Museo della Profumeria di Grasse), contenente una nota di salicilato di amile, e la Rose Jacqueminot (Coty) con Rhodinol (geranio) e ionone (violetta). Leggenda vuole che, dopo aver cercato invano di convincere il Direttore di una catena di Grandi Magazzini di Parigi a vendere il suo profumo nel reparto profumeria, senza esserci riuscito, ne buttasse in terra un flacone che rompendosi, inondò l'aria di questo dolce effluvio di rosa, provocando una ressa tra le signore che si precipitarono a chiedere dove potevano acquistare quel meraviglioso profumo. A pensar male si potrebbe dire che erano amiche del fascinoso Monsieur Coty, in ogni caso da quel momento le fragranze Coty decollarono e ben presto dalla Francia giunsero a tutta Europa e negli Usa.
