The "good" scent

In this last period, mainly due to various controversies raised on the web, I thought a lot about the difference between a well composed perfume and a badly composed one. That is, what are the characteristics of a "good" perfume, and how it differs from a perfume done sketchily, incorrect or unbalanced ?  And then: is a "bad" perfume always uncomfortable to wear ?  And again: those who review perfumes on what basis should base their reviews? How important is personal taste and how the culture and the sense of smell? Let's begin with the first question: How do you tell a good scent? I think a perfume may show mistakes under several points of view: 1 an unbalanced pyramid 2 mistakes in the compositional structure 3 inadequate raw materials 4 unfit for the brand it's launched for

Turtle Vetiver n.2: Front (Isabelle Doyen per Les Nez)

Immagine

Front: the new Turtle Vetiver by Isabelle Doyen for Les Nez

Front is part 2 of the Turtle Project (website here), that is, a group of artists who contribute to the artistic discourse through their own means of expression. Isabelle Doyen (composer for Lez Nez) is part of this project, contributing with her “Turtle vetiver” olfactory exercises. I had already wrote about it (here), when Rene Schifferle, owner of the brand Lez Nez made me try her first vetiver exercise, last year.  During the move I received exercise No. 2 named “Front” that if possible, I liked even more.

Fougère Royale e Quelques Fleur L'Original - Houbigant

Immagine

Houbigant: Fougère Royale and Quelques Fleurs (#2)

Immagine
This post originates here Fougère Royale (1882) is the first fougère scent in the history of perfumery, namely the head of a family characterized by the presence of aromatic notes (lavender, anise, sage, basil, tarragon, etc.) coupled with spices and woods, delicately contrasted by a sweet accord (vanilla, tonka bean, heliotropin). Fougère Royale contains coumarin, a synthetic molecule derived from hay which had just been discovered. Even Jicky by Guerlain (1889) contains coumarin, along with linalool and vanillin, and this makes them the first "modern" scents in history, that is not exclusively composed with natural raw materials, and thus with a certain degree of abstraction.

During one of the meetings at Cambi Cafè, there was also a lady working for Houbigant (I'm not sure she wants to be named), who had already attended a previous meeting, and since she found useful, whether for business or personal interest, deepen her understanding of aesthetics in perfumery and historical perfumes, she also took part last time. And since we talked about floral fragrances she brought us a gift to smell: the extract of Quelques Fleurs (originally created by Paul Parquet and Robert Beinaime in 1912) and the esprit de parfum of Fougère Royale (originally created by Paul Parquet in 1912), in the modern reconstruction made by the Houbigant brand and launched last year. Founded in 1775, Houbigant, along with its then-competitors Lubin and Piver, laid the groundwork of modern perfumery, from which (in the late nineteenth century and early twentieth century) Guerlain, Caron, Molinard, and Coty took their moves.

Il Viaggiatore

Immagine
Buon ascolto!

Traslochi

Immagine

Moving

In these past two weeks I've been less present than usual, here on the blog. The reason? A move. Not exactly the most relaxing experience. Especially since in a few months I'll have another, because now we are in an apartment that my friend Sabrina has kindly provided, but as soon as possible, we will move permanently to the new house.  The good point is that packing boxes and boxes made me -once more- aware of what's my life like today, because I had to choose only the important things to take here, and pack the others away in a store, waiting for the final transfer.  Obviously, my first thought was for perfumes.
